There’s a big craze going on in men’s fashion right now around socks. Seems the crazier the pattern and brighter the color, the better.

Well, we’ve never prided ourselves on being trend followers…or setters…but we do recognize the necessity to keep your feet dry and warm while riding this time of year. And since you’ll likely be wearing them with boots, it doesn’t really matter what they look like because no one’s going to see them!

There are a couple of options out there – buy what are branded as motorcycle specific socks or just go buy heavy duty hiking socks and forget about it. It won’t save you much money, but it also won’t make you wonder if you’re getting ripped off by buying something that looks and feels like a heavy sock but says “motorcycle” on the tag.

We like just about any SmartWool hiking or ski sock sold at REI. They’re made to take a beating and keep your feet dry and warm in all kinds of weather. We’ve got three pair we bought five years ago, and they’re still as good as the day we bought them. The key is to wear a liner underneath them. Get one that wicks the moisture away from your foot. Silk, believe it or not, is the best.

Of course, in really cold weather, electric heated socks can’t be beat. But that’s a product for another day.
