We keep reading about this bike and how many moto journalists say it’s nearest competitor is a toss up between this bike and its smaller kin — the FZ-07 — rather than another competitor. We’ve yet to throw a leg over one, but we’re working on it. Until then, here’s what the lucky ones who have been able to were saying about the 2014 when it first debuted:

“It may not have the insane numbers of something like the KTM Super Duke 1290 or the sex appeal of the BMW R nineT, but at $8,000, the bang-for-your-buck value is at the top of the charts.” – Revzilla.

“…there is no doubt the FZ-09 is the enthusiast’s choice. Wicked fast in a straight line, this Yamaha triple blasts through the quarter-mile in 10.66 seconds. That’s only a few ticks off our trio of exotics leading this Year of the Naked section and barely behind the Monster 1200 S, Speed Triple R, and Z1000, all of which cost considerably more.” – Cycleworld

“There wasn’t anything not to like in the all-new 847cc Triple, with all the modern ride-by-wire trimmings in a designer chassis, for a price substantially less than its Euro-competitors.” – Motorcycle.com

Apparently, the one problem the 2014s had was some fuel mapping issues that Yamaha corrected in their 2015 models. So the glowing reviews still stand with even a bit more luster. All the more reason to give this one a try  and see if they can pry us off.
