Funny how most people don’t have a problem letting a friend borrow their car. But just see what happens when a friend asks to borrow a bike. It’s one of the fastest ways to lose a friend because if something goes wrong, it can really go wrong. So if you’re looking for some responses to the ask – both direct and indirect – here you go:

Ride along – “Sure, got a helmet? I’ll take you wherever you need to go.”

Mechanical problem – “I would, but this thing’s been acting up lately. I need to get it checked out first…and no you don’t need to help me do that.”

Legalities – “I haven’t paid my insurance yet. Once I do, I’ll let you know.”

Spouse/Girlfriend – “My old lady is the only one who rides my bike besides me…and you know how that goes.”

Direct – “I know we’re friends, but I’m not comfortable with anyone but me riding my bike.”

Really direct – “No freakin’ way.”

If they’re true friends, they’ll understand any or all of these.
